According to a very recent Nielson study, the usage of video by consumers on mobile devices may be lower than many think. The study was conducted just last month in October. It concluded that only 15.8 percent of those studied had ever played a video on their iPod or iTunes. Also approximately one third of the group, of 400, even had a video capable iPod.
The Numbers do not really get any better from there. The study also concluded that only around 1 percent of content played on iPods overall was video content, with the figure growing to 2.2 percent for owners specifically of video iPods.
Perhaps this is a good indicator for the media companies to provide good video content. How would the number look if there was a relevant morning news cast available for download every morning for users to watch during their commute? With the recent announcement of NBC offering nightly programs available immediately after airing, maybe thing will change.
