The Nintendo Wii has not even been released, but there is already news of a second version to be made available in the second half of 2007. The updated Wii will offer DVD movie playback and come in at a higher price. DVD movie playback is to be handled by Sonic Solutions who offer the Roxio line of DVD burning software. The updated Wii will not offer HD or Blue-ray media support.
The question was posed to Nintendo regarding upgraded audio capabilities such as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, to which the response was “There is no new info on new capabilities regarding audio.” So far it doesn’t look to be much of an update.
The source of this article concluded that this hardly seemed like a worthy upgrade, calling it a “waste of money unless you live in a box with major space issues.” It will be interesting to see if the market agrees with this conclusion.
