Microsoft announced that it has struck a deal that will have it share a portion of the sales of the upcoming Zune media player with Universal Music Group. Microsoft said that it agreed to the deal with thoughts about marketing. They are interested in allowing song sharing and other promotions. Microsoft was also concerned about facing the prospect of a Zune launch without content from the world’s largest music dealer with artists such as U2, Eminem, and many more.
Universal Music Group was after a portion of the sales of the device, because in their words “The only factor was that we feel that there’s a great deal of music that’s (stored) on these devices that was never legitimately obtained, and we wanted to get some sort of compensation for what we thought we’re losing,”. Universal also stated that a portion of their income from the deal will be shared with the artists.
The exact details of the deal were not released.
