Analysts have speculated that with Microsoft’s Windows Vista not being available to the public until after the holiday shopping period, that Apple may be able to cash in during this lucrative time. Apple’s share of the computer market with its Mac computers has recently joined the top four at 5.8%. This was achieved after a 30% growth in sales over the previous year.
The remarkable success of Apple’s iPod has certainly not hurt, as it has kept Apple in the spotlight with a market dominating product. Microsoft will release the Zune, an “iPod killer”, next week but so far it is failing to have a “killer” impact on reviewers. Given the success Microsoft is enjoying in the console gaming market with its Xbox 360, the Zune may make it long term. However, that will not help them now. Unless Microsoft can really pull something out of a hat with the launch of the Zune, it will not have the impact that I believe they are after. The iPod could easily continue to dominate here.
One potential saving grace for Microsoft and PC manufacturers this holiday season, is the free upgrade to Vista. However, I’m not sure how many consumers will see the offer, as having to install an upgraded operating system within a few months of purchase could be a turn off. Given this, Apple’s share of the computer market may continue to grow, resulting in a very happy holidays indeed.
