More details about the $99 PC from Zonbu are emerging. This budget computer from Zonbu is quite small, as the picture illustrates. The base unit comes with a 1.2GHz Via C7 CPU(They are still around?), integrated graphics chip, and 512MB RAM. The storage is a frugal 4GB on a compact flash card, as there is no hard drive. The lack of hard drive should come as no surprise given the unit isn’t much bigger than one itself. Instead of a hard drive, the $99 price tag comes as a part of an agreement to purchase storage over the internet. Purchasers can get 25GB of space for $12.95 a month or 100GB for $19.95 a month from the Amazon S3 storage solution. This does have the added benefit of also acting as a backup service, for keeping your files safe. In fact, you need to agree to purchase 2 years of storage to get the unit for the $99 price tag. You can however opt to get the base unit without a storage subscription for $249. Is this starting to sound like the mobile phone companies yet?
The Zonbu PC runs a customized version of Gentoo Linux, and comes with the usual assortment of free applications, such as Firefox. This also means that it probably will not run your Windows programs without serious work, if it runs them at all.
